In the heyday of magazines such as LIFE and LOOK, great photography and stories were front and center. These publications championed long-form photo essays, dedicating page after page to stunning photographs and intriguing stories. But now, with magazine and newspaper budgets shrinking and readerships plummeting, most publications are no longer paying for the traditional photo essays that they once sponsored.
American-Journal.org was born out of a desire to create a venue for great photography and stories from within the United States, while also providing a revenue stream for freelance photojournalists. American-Journal.org's mission is to share true stories about the people, places, events and icons that form the nation's identity. The stories presented offer glimpses into American culture in hopes of providing a better understanding of the country and its people.
While most publications rely on advertising to raise revenue, American-Journal is free of advertising clutter to enhance the reader experience. On top of that, we don't charge subscription fees. Instead, we leave it up to readers to determine what our product is worth to them and encourage them to make annual donations in the amounts of their choosing.
But until we have a large readership base, we must rely on other means to fund the publication. American-Journal.org is currently being published and all the content on the site thus far has been donated by photographers and writers who believe in our mission. These contributors have been kind enough to help us jump-start the publication.
If you enjoy what we are doing and believe in supporting independent journalism, please consider making a donation. Your generosity will enable independent photographers and writers to continue to produce compelling documentation of our nation. We appreciate your support!
What Your Support Means Your support will enable us to grow our reader base over the first year by funding the contributors whose work will appear in American-Journal.
Additionally, you will enable American-Journal to bring great photography and true stories about the United States, its people and diverse culture to a worldwide audience.
Our Goal Our goal is to raise $21,000.00 to fully fund one year of American-Journal. The funding will be divided to compensate our contributors based on which sections of the publication their works appear.

Great site just learned about it. And have to say would love to be a part of it! Photojournalism needs a place to be shown not only as photos but as stories. Still many places and things that need to be seen and revealed. Photojournalism can and does shine light on people, places and life, that a story alone can’t. Together good writing and good photography compliment the readers and viewers experience. To us that photograph and write these are important to us. Light-gear-technique-etc, but to viewers it’s the visual and the information gleaned that count. The more we all do to write photograph and publish all the info we can everyone will benefit. I would like to thank American-Journal for their part in keeping photojournalism alive and well. I look forward to contributing all I can and with submissions that I hope will be accepted if they meet your high standards. Thanks Again. Nick Nov 3, 2011
