In the heyday of magazines such as LIFE and LOOK, great photography and stories were front and center. These publications championed long-form photo essays, dedicating page after page to stunning photographs and intriguing stories. But now, with magazine and newspaper budgets shrinking and readerships plummeting, most publications are no longer paying for the traditional photo essays that they once sponsored.

American-Journal.org was born out of a desire to create a venue for great photography and stories from within the United States, while also providing a revenue stream for freelance photojournalists. American-Journal.org’s mission is to share true stories about the people, places, events and icons that form the nation’s identity. The stories presented offer glimpses into American culture in hopes of providing a better understanding of the country and its people.
